3 Months Off: Getting My Business Ready For Maternity Leave

Let’s be real—running a business while preparing for maternity leave is no joke. I’ve got a coaching business, a podcast, and a part-time job… and in just a couple of months, I’ll also have a newborn in my arms and a toddler by my side. 👶🍼
So how am I planning to fully step away for at least three months without letting everything fall apart? By building a business that supports me, not the other way around 😌
I’m walking you through the exact framework I’m using to take intentional, well-deserved time off while keeping the wheels turning behind the scenes. Whether you’re prepping for a life season like maternity leave or simply craving more freedom, these strategies will help you run your business smarter—not harder. 💡
Systems & Software 💻
First things first: systems are your best friend.
I use Asana for everything from content planning to launch workflows. It’s where my ideas live, where my team collaborates, and where I go to not start every workday wondering “Where was I again?” 🤨
Gone are the days of 15 scattered Google Docs and voice notes I never revisit. 🤭 Now, I open my laptop, see my workflows clearly laid out, and jump straight into action. This has completely transformed how I plan ahead—and will be a lifeline while I’m offline with a newborn.
Automations
If you’re not automating, you’re ghosting your audience. I learned that the hard way. 🫣
Here’s how I’m automating:
🩷 Email nurture sequences that welcome new subscribers and lead them toward a CTA (without me needing to lift a finger).
🩷 Pre-scheduled posts in my paid Kajabi community so it continues to thrive even when I’m not checking in weekly.
🩷 Client welcome sequences that onboard new customers with love and clarity the second they buy.
These automations ensure everyone feels guided, supported, and connected—even while I’m changing diapers and catching naps where I can. 💤
SOPs
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) might sound corporate and clunky, but trust me—they are the unsung heroes of a scalable business. 📈
Every recurring task in my business has a documented workflow, complete with step-by-step instructions and even Loom videos. It’s not just about efficiency—it’s about empowering my team to own their roles without constantly needing me. 🎥
And with a baby on the way, trust me: I don’t want to be micromanaging anyone. SOPs make that possible.
Setting Clear Expectations
I’ve had honest, heartfelt conversations with my team over lunch. Together, we’ve mapped out how we’ll handle the transition while I’m out. 🤝
We talked through every scenario. I shared the vision, and they offered even better ideas than I had. 🤯
I also removed myself as the bottleneck in task assignments. Now, everything is clearly laid out in Asana: what needs to be done, when, and how. They don’t need to wait for my green light—they just go. And that’s exactly what I need right now.
Communication Channels That Actually Work
Good communication doesn’t mean being “always on.” It means creating channels that are effective.
Asana is for project-related comments and questions.
Slack is for quick chats, check-ins, and casual updates (like planning our next team lunch).
I reply as soon as I can—not because I’m glued to my phone, but because I want to model what healthy, open communication looks like.
My team knows they’re heard, respected, and supported. That’s leadership. 🙌🏻
Batch Creating Content
Here’s the truth: content ideas are happening all the time. A client win, a conversation, a question from my team—it all becomes inspiration.
So I use Asana’s content planner to track ideas in real time, then flesh them out and move them through the production process. Once a month, I do a batch recording day—makeup on, high energy, and ready to roll. 🤩
It saves me SO much time, and it means I can step away knowing my message will keep reaching the people who need it. 🫶🏻
So… Can You Really Step Away from Your Business?
Yes. You can.
But it starts with the backend. The systems, the strategies, the intentional communication, and the delegation. This is how I’m buying back my time, protecting my energy, and creating a business that fits into my life—not the other way around.
Whether you're prepping for a maternity leave, a sabbatical, or simply more sustainable work-life balance… these strategies will support you in building a business that runs with or without you.
