Mistakes to Avoid in Your Sales Funnel

Yep. I said it.
I completely screwed up my sales funnel… for five whole years. And honestly? It’s kind of embarrassing. But I’ve learned that honesty in business isn’t just refreshing—it’s necessary.
So I'm sharing the four big mistakes I made, how I fixed them, and what you can learn from it—especially if you’re a content creator, course creator, or building your own business online.
Because I wish someone had shared them with me.
If we rewind a little, when I first stepped into the online business world, I launched a course I was so proud of—Motorcycle Mindset Academy. I poured my heart into it. It was real, powerful, and it’s still something I sell to this day.
But here’s the thing: for years, I never properly looked at the full customer journey. Like, from the moment someone saw my free guide or content, to checkout.
It wasn’t until I started prepping for maternity leave (and wanted my automations running like a dream) that I finally looked deeper… and realized my funnel was not right.
Mistake 1: My Opt-In Page Was a Hot Mess π«£
I thought I was being all artsy with a big banner image of a woman riding a bike. It looked cool to me… but the text completely disappeared into the photo. No one could read it. π
And even worse? I wasn’t actually giving people a reason to opt in. It just said something vague like “Live your freedom life.” What does that even mean? I was asking people to hand over their email with zero clarity on what they’d get.
Fix:
- Clear headline
- Readable layout
- Specific lead magnet with tangible value
Mistake 2: I Ghosted My Email List ππΌβοΈ
This one hurts.
When someone did opt in, I sent one email with the freebie… and then never followed up. No nurture sequence. No stories. No connection. Nothing.
It’s wild because my YouTube channel was attracting really warm leads. People were finding me through content they loved—and I just dropped the ball. I didn’t give them a next step or even say hi again. Total missed opportunity.
Fix:
- Created a simple, story-driven 5-part email nurture sequence
- Added a strong CTA to enroll in the course
- Kept the tone aligned with my brand: human, real, relatable
Mistake 3: My Sales Page Was a Word Dump π
Fresh out of corporate life, I thought the more I explained, the more professional it looked. Wrong. β
The page was so wordy and cluttered that even I got overwhelmed looking at it. I over-explained everything. Instead of guiding someone to a decision, it just confused them.
Sometimes less really is more. π
Fix:
- Cut the copy down to 20% of its original length
- Kept only the essentials: who it’s for, what’s inside, why it matters
- Let the visuals breathe
Mistake 4: My Checkout Page Was Trying Too Hard
The checkout page should be clean and fast. But I treated mine like another sales pitch—tons of text, more explaining, more distractions.
People were ready to buy… and I basically got in their way.
Fix:
Moved the payment form to the top (no scrolling!)
Cut the fluff
Added urgency + clear CTA: “Let’s roll the throttle on this thing.”
What Turned It Around π
I looked at the numbers. My Pinterest pins were driving thousands of people to my landing page. But conversions? Super low.
Once I saw that, it all clicked. It wasn’t a traffic problem—it was a funnel problem.
So I rewired the entire journey. I didn’t reinvent the course (the offer itself was solid), I just fixed the path to get there.
And now? I finally feel like it reflects who I am, what my business stands for, and the experience I want people to have.
If you've got a sales funnel, I encourage you to take a look at it π. Go through every step like a first-time visitor.
π Is it clear?
π Is it warm and welcoming?
π Are you holding someone’s hand through the journey—or making them work for it?
π Does your checkout page actually close the deal?
This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being intentional. And if you’re cringing like I was—good. That’s your sign it’s time to fix it.
