You Don't Have To Lead The Pack

Are you a natural leader? The type-A kind of person who steps up without hesitation—whether it’s at work, at home, or in your business? Maybe you’re the one who fills the gaps, finds the solutions, and makes sure everything runs smoothly.
I get it—because I’m that person too. For so long, I thought leadership meant being at the front. Always “on.” Always ready with the answer. Always proving I could handle it all.
But here’s the truth: you don’t always have to lead from the front. In fact, sometimes the most powerful form of leadership is knowing when to step back.
The Motorcycle Lesson That Changed Everything
This hit me hard recently while riding motorcycles with a friend 🏍️. I’ve been riding for years, and naturally, I slipped into coach mode—checking my mirrors constantly, making sure she was okay, leading the way. But I noticed she was right on my tail, itching to ride with more confidence.
So, I pulled over, let her take the lead, and fell back into what bikers call the “sweeper” position—the rider who stays at the back of the pack, keeping an eye on things and holding space for everyone.
And you know what? She soared. By me moving out of the way, she stepped into her own confidence, made her own decisions, and showed me she didn’t actually need me to guide her every move.
Leading From the Back in Business
I’ve seen the same lesson in business, too. As a leader, it’s tempting to keep feeding people instructions, handing over tasks step by step. But when I fall back—when I give space—my team surprises me every single time.
They learn faster. They bring fresh ideas. They innovate in ways I never could have, because they’re seeing things with new eyes.
And meanwhile, I can breathe. I don’t have to carry the weight of having all the answers. Because leadership isn’t about being the loudest or the first. It’s about creating room for others to rise.
Lessons I've Learned
⚡️ Leading from the back doesn’t mean stepping out. It means holding space.
⚡️ Others might do things differently than you would—but different doesn’t mean wrong.
⚡️ True leadership often looks like empowering others, not overshadowing them.
When you lead as the sweeper, you’re still protecting the pack. You’re still making sure no one gets left behind. But you’re also giving others the chance to accelerate, to shine, to trust themselves.
So if you’re always the one in charge, always the one with the answers, maybe it’s time to roll off the throttle. Let someone else set the pace. Trust that they’re more capable than you think.
You don’t have to lead the pack to be a leader. 🩷
